2013 - 10 Year Anniversary for Life Coach Media

By Jeff Wasserman

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the term Life Coach was first used in 1986.  The use of the term as a helping professional dates closer to 1992 when Thomas  Leonard  brought Life Coaching to the mainstream and founded the first coaching school.

In February 2003, Thomas passed away unexpectedly and this left a huge void in the Life Coach profession.  The profession was in it's infancy and looking for a new leader or voice in the profession.

The ICF ( International Coaching Federation) which Thomas started was struggling to become the force or regulator in the profession.  Thomas had very different views than the current board at the ICF at the time of his passing.  Thomas had in fact funded a new association, the IAC ( International Association of Coaches).

In February 2003, after returning home from the Future of Coaching convention in San Mateo California, I founded Life Coach Media, USLCA ( US Life Coach Association) and Life Coach College.

My goal for Life Coach Media was simply to bring Life Coaching to the people.  I wanted to use every platform available to get the word out about Life Coaching.  Merriam-Webster describes Life Coaching as : an advisor who helps people make decisions, set and reach goals, or deal with problems.  While some coaching organizations may not agree on this description, I think it is the perfect description for Life Coaches and Life Coaching.

At first I started a radio show in Atlanta on WGUN 1010, then posting recorded MP3's on Life Coaching on my website.  In 2010 I started a podcast, Life Coach Radio Show, which can be accessed on I-Tunes free of charge.  In 2011 I purchased a RV and wrapped it for the 2011/2012 Life Coach Road Trip.

During the 2011-2012 Life Coach Road Trip, I traveled over 10,000 miles visiting cities, towns, communities and trade shows.  I traveled coast to coast promoting Life Coaching.  I picked up the nickname "Johnny Appleseed of Life Coaching."

Last week I started out on the 2013 Life Coach Tour, traveling from Atlanta Georgia to Las Vegas.  After two trade shows, I am now on my way to Utah.  During the 2013 Life Coach Tour, I will visit the west coast, mid-west and the eastern seaboard, returning to Georgia in December 2013.

Wherever I go, people are interested in Life Coaching because it is part self-help and part motivation.  I listen to people, I talk to people and I help people see their situation in a different light or different view.

One thing I have found about myself, people naturally want to talk to me, want to share with me, want to hear what I have to say.  I am a natural born storyteller with a passion for helping others.

If you would like to find out more on Life Coaching or if you are a Life Coach looking to be part of a community built on success, not certifications, restrictions and government legislation, please contact me at Jeff@LifeCoachMedia.com or call 800-841-8776.

Georgia to Vegas Trip

I am driving the Life Coach Bus from Dahlonega Georgia to Las Vegas NV.  Along the way, I ran into a snow storm in Amarillo Texas.  Tomorrow I am off to Flagstaff AZ and then into Las Vegas.

The trip has been great, the snow is beautiful, but difficult to drive in.

I will be at the New Media Expo on January 6th in Las Vegas.

Its Time To Believe

I watch a lot of news, I travel all over the country and I see the good and the bad.  Life has its ups and downs, setbacks and achievements but at the end of the day, we can focus on the good or the bad.

Now that the election process is behind us, we are faced with an economy that is struggling, but we are surviving.  As I read the paper and on line, you can see everything from murders, killings, rapes, robberies and the damage from Hurricane Sandy.  That is where "Believe" comes in.

You can face the problems of society head on and then focus on the good.  Life will always bring us tragedy, problems and challenges, but in the holiday season, people start to believe, they start to have a mindset that "all is good" and that we need to watch out for our fellow man.

From helping others, to politicians becoming "real."  I just noticed where Vice President Joe Biden shopped at Costco yesterday.  Just like you and me, ( except for the secret service all around him) but it made him appear "real."

We are faced with war, with people who don't understand one another and think weapons and bombs are the answer.  Imagine if everyone in the world would just think about life, about respect for mankind and all wars would be resolved around a conference table.  Imagine what a different world that would be.

I believe that someday, we will grow, develop and understand one another so much better, that everyone will learn to treat their neighbors with such acceptance and respect, that we will become "one."  When that happens, imagine using our resources in a positive way, instead of in a negative way.

In this holiday season, I think these balloons sum up where we all need to start on this personal development / personal growth journey, we just need to believe it can happen.

Happy Holidays.

Jeff

Jeff Visits the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

This week I had the opportunity to visit Pigeon Forge Tennessee with the Life Coach Bus.  While in Pigeon Forge, I took the bus and rode up through the Great Smoky Mountains and then came back through Gatlinburg.  Even in the cold winter months, the National Park is just beautiful.  The leaves are off the trees and you can see for miles.

I have been going to Gatlinburg since I was in my early 20's and I have seen so much change.  The town was growing and mom and pop shops were sprouting up everywhere.  Craft stores lined the streets.

Then Pigeon Forge got into the tourism action, building motels and hotels on the main street.  Malls sprouted up and national restaurant chains lined the street.

Today, so much has changed.  The craft businesses have all moved out to the rural areas, including Glades Road.  The small mom and pop stores and restaurants have all sold out or closed, due to the high rental rates and today, Gatlinburg, which is still one of my favorite little getaway towns, is lined with national chains.

This week I noticed they built a large Walgreens, 5 Guys opened in Gatlinburg on the strip and the old Burning Bush restaurant building has been demolished.  In Pigeon Forge, the small family owned motels are slowly being replaced by large, national chain high rise hotels.

Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg will always be a great place to visit, but the reason to visit has changed so much in the past 20 years, from good old fashion mountain hospitality, craft stores and family restaurants, to outlet malls, high rise hotels and chain restaurants.

If you have a chance, visit the area in the off season, the rates are more reasonable, the people are friendly and there is no line or wait for anything.

NYPD - Times Square

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, I took my family to New York to see the parade, shop in Times Square and enjoy the city.

My daughters remind me often that every time we come to New York / Times Square, I comment on how "tourist friendly" the police are.  I often say, I wonder if Ray Kelly, New York City Police Commissioner since 2002, requires the cops in Times Square to go to "hospitality class."  The cops in Times Square are of a different mind set than most police officers you meet in big cities.

In the media today, we seem to focus on the cops that do bad things, instead of the cops that do kind things, go out of their way to help a tourist and treat tourist as they are the customer of the city.

Today while I was putting together a few pictures of my trip to New York, I came across an article about a NYPD officer named Lawrence DePrimo, who was on counterterrorism duty in Times Square, saw the older homeless man without shoes sitting on 42nd Street. DePrimo, 25, left and then returned with a pair of boots he bought at a nearby store for the homeless man.

This wasn't an act of kindness by a police officer, it was an act of kindness by a human being who happens to be a police officer.  People often say, there are good cops and bad cops, the truth is, there are good people and bad people, some of which are in law enforcement.

I am not sure where the credit goes for the way the cops in Times Square treat the tourist, but it shows that even in a large city with millions of tourist passing through every day, these cops can do their job, keep the peace and still be respectful to their fellow man.

When I speak to large groups about Life Coaching and personal development, I remind everyone, regardless if they are in public service, working at Wal-Mart or selling cars, your actions, each and every one, even if very small, go a long way in someones life.  You may not always be recognized for your actions, but you can and will make a difference in someones life.

For Officer DePrimo, you have my best wishes this holiday season.

BookExpo America

Last week I was in New York and attended BookExpo America. This is the largest book expo of it’s kind. Each year that I attend, it seems like more and more authors are attending these shows. When I speak to groups I am often asked about book publishing, self-publishing and e-books. I always give the same advice, every time I am asked.

Today there are more opportunities than ever to publish your own book. If you have something to say, you should write a book, it is a great learning experience and helps you clarify your ideas and thoughts, just like journaling.

Having said that, writing the book is the easy part. Once you write the book, if you think the large publishing houses will listen, give you the time or day or be interested, your dreaming, unless you are in the news, famous or a politician. If your famous, they will seek you out, otherwise you will need to sell them on the idea.

Marketing your new book, trying to get a publisher to look at your manuscript is the most difficult part. If you are determined or have a unique marketing plan, you will succeed and you will feel a special satisfaction, but it takes a lot of hard work.

New Media Seminar - Welcome Bags

Life Coach Media was pleased to sponsor the Talkers 2012 New Media Seminar in New York on June 7th, 2012. Life Coach Media provided the convention welcome bags, and several gifts for the attendees. At the lunch break, I looked around and all I could see was a sea of blue Life Coach Media tote bags. This event was amazing. I look forward to sponsoring the October West Coast New Media Seminar.

Michael Harrison - Talkers Magazine

When I coach someone or teach a coaching class, I often say, “ when you are ready to learn, a teacher will appear.” Or sometimes I like to say, “ you meet people in your life who make an impact, almost as if your path crossed for a reason.”

In my life, that person is Michael Harrison, founder of Talkers and Talkers Magazine. When I first met Michael in Austin Texas many years ago at a NAB Radio show, his words resonated with me, his mannerisms touched me in a special way. Michael was an early pioneer of the concept or idea of the Media Station. While that idea seemed far off at that first introduction, today we are seeing the “media station” used in almost every market, large and small.

I owe a great deal to Michael. He has been my mentor, my inspiration and my motivation. I am looking forward to many more years of Talkers conventions with Michael.

New Media Seminar - New York - June 7th, 2012

On Thursday, June 7th I attended the New York Talkers Conference, currently known as the New Media Seminar. As Michael Harrison, founder of Talkers, New Media is now old. When I started in the media business, everything was print, audio and film. Several years ago, the digital age came about. Today, everything is digital and on line. The word Radio is slowly being replaced by Media and Talk Radio is now referred to Talk Broadcasting or Talk Media.

The best part of the Talkers Conferences is the time set aside to meet and greet, to visit with old friends in the business and meet new ones. Talkers is hosting a west coast event in October in Los Angeles and I will be there.

Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A

In Sunday’s AJC, there was an interview with Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A.

Truett is truly what I call a Great American. One quote resonated with me, it is an example of what I teach when I go around and speak at high schools and colleges.

Truett said, “We can teach them ( employees) to make cole slaw and cook a Chick-fil-A, But we can’t change their character.” This is so true, this is what I share with students.

If you want to improve your life, you need to start by improving your philosophy on life. This leads to what Truett Cathy calls Character.

2012 Life Coach Road Trip - Update

Have you have been following the 2011-2012 Life Coach Road Trip?  I left Dahlonega Georgia on August 21st, 2011.  I took the Life Coach Bus from North Georgia,  to Chattanooga, Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, on to Albuquerque NM, into Flagstaff Az and arrived in Las Vegas on September 20th , 2011 for the yearly ICF ( International Coaching Federation) convention held at Mandalay Bay Resort on Las Vegas Blvd.

The 2011-2012 Life Coach Road Trip resumed in October, when I drove the Life Coach Bus from Las Vegas to San Diego.  The trip continued to Los Angeles, where I attended the Talkers Magazine Southern California Talk Radio Summit on October 20th, 2011 in Hollywood California.

On January 3rd, 2012, the Life Coach Road Trip resumed.  I picked up the Life Coach Bus in Culver City California and today I am in Dallas Texas, on my way back to Dahlonega Georgia.  See the pictures below and follow the 2012 Life Coach Road Trip.  I have driven over 4,000 so far on this trip and have 1,000 more to go.  The 2012 Life Coach Trip has several exciting trips planned, including traveling up the east coast to New York.

Please visit the Life Coach Media Facebook page and "Like" the page, so you can stay connected.  Facebook.com/LifeCoachMedia

The 2011-2012 Life Coach Road Trip was designed to promote Jeff's Life Coach Radio Show.
Today, the Life Coach Road Trip has become a marketing and advertising vehicle for the Life Coach profession.  People stop me and ask about Life Coaching whenever they see the Life Coach Bus.

I left Los Angeles on January 4rd, 2012 and headed to Las Vegas.  Something about Las Vegas and the bright lights on the strip.  I have been to Las Vegas many times, but one thing in recent years still amazes me, with all the big hotels, shows and casinos, the people still line up in front of the pawn shop on Las Vegas Blvd near the downtown, where the TV show Pawn Stars if filmed.  I have never seen anything like this.  People line up for hours to get a look inside the store.  The crowds are so large, they have a hot dog stand outside to sell to the crowds. Cabs line up waiting to drop off and pick up tourist who came to see the store that made the TV show famous.

After a fun filled week in Las Vegas, I headed towards Kingdom Az.  The trip is filled with beautiful mountain views.  The new road around the Hoover Dam is an amazing view.  Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam are one of the most beautiful views along the way.  The trip continued on to Phoenix Az.

When I arrived in Phoenix, I stayed in the suburbs, in a beautiful town called Surpise Az.  Surprise Arizona is home to the Texas Rangers & Kansas City Royals spring training.  The stadium in Surprise Arizona is amazing.

After leaving Phoenix Arizona, I traveled to Tuscon.  After visiting in Tuscon, I headed towards El Paso Texas.  Along the way, I wanted to stop for lunch.  I found the cutest little restaurant in Benson Az, the Apple Farm Restaurant.  How times have changed, here is a very small, family run diner type of restaurant in a very small town and they have free WiFi.

On Friday January 13th, I arrived in El Paso.  I never realized how large and how industrial El Paso has become.  I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express.  As a traveler, or as some call me, a road warrior, I am amazed at the difference in customer service, attitude and level of service I receive each night at a different Holiday Inn Express.  One thing is for sure, regardless of the look of the hotel, the age of the hotel or the location of the hotel, the employee at the front desk who makes the first connection or has the first interaction with the guest, is the key.  He or she makes the stay or leaves you feeling like the hotel staff does not care.

Traveling along I-10 towards Dallas- Ft. Worth,  you come across a town called Sweetwater Texas, just before Odessa.  The town is home to some of the largest wind farms in the county.  As far as the eye can see, rows and rows of very large modern day windmills line the open fields.  These very large windmills have created a second boom for west Texas.  Oil has always been the industry of choice for west Texas, but the wind farms have created a vibrant economy in and around Odessa Texas.

I arrived in Ft Worth on Friday January 19th.  The Stockyards in old Ft. Worth have been transformed into a terrific tourist area.  The cobblestone streets, the afternoon cattle drives down Exchange street and the Cowboy Hall of Fame, help create the feel of a old world stockyard and cattle sale.  It is a wonderful place to visit, lots of great restaurants, steak houses and gift shops.

I am now in Dallas Texas.  I am heading east on I-20 tomorrow towards Shreveport Louisiana.  I will be posting new shows in the next few days.  Please check back often.
