According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the term Life Coach was first used in 1986. The use of the term as a helping professional dates closer to 1992 when Thomas Leonard brought Life Coaching to the mainstream and founded the first coaching school.
In February 2003, Thomas passed away unexpectedly and this left a huge void in the Life Coach profession. The profession was in it's infancy and looking for a new leader or voice in the profession.
The ICF ( International Coaching Federation) which Thomas started was struggling to become the force or regulator in the profession. Thomas had very different views than the current board at the ICF at the time of his passing. Thomas had in fact funded a new association, the IAC ( International Association of Coaches).
In February 2003, after returning home from the Future of Coaching convention in San Mateo California, I founded Life Coach Media, USLCA ( US Life Coach Association) and Life Coach College.
My goal for Life Coach Media was simply to bring Life Coaching to the people. I wanted to use every platform available to get the word out about Life Coaching. Merriam-Webster describes Life Coaching as : an advisor who helps people make decisions, set and reach goals, or deal with problems. While some coaching organizations may not agree on this description, I think it is the perfect description for Life Coaches and Life Coaching.
At first I started a radio show in Atlanta on WGUN 1010, then posting recorded MP3's on Life Coaching on my website. In 2010 I started a podcast, Life Coach Radio Show, which can be accessed on I-Tunes free of charge. In 2011 I purchased a RV and wrapped it for the 2011/2012 Life Coach Road Trip.
During the 2011-2012 Life Coach Road Trip, I traveled over 10,000 miles visiting cities, towns, communities and trade shows. I traveled coast to coast promoting Life Coaching. I picked up the nickname "Johnny Appleseed of Life Coaching."
Last week I started out on the 2013 Life Coach Tour, traveling from Atlanta Georgia to Las Vegas. After two trade shows, I am now on my way to Utah. During the 2013 Life Coach Tour, I will visit the west coast, mid-west and the eastern seaboard, returning to Georgia in December 2013.
Wherever I go, people are interested in Life Coaching because it is part self-help and part motivation. I listen to people, I talk to people and I help people see their situation in a different light or different view.
One thing I have found about myself, people naturally want to talk to me, want to share with me, want to hear what I have to say. I am a natural born storyteller with a passion for helping others.
