NYPD - Times Square

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, I took my family to New York to see the parade, shop in Times Square and enjoy the city. 

My daughters remind me often that every time we come to New York / Times Square, I comment on how "tourist friendly" the police are.  I often say, I wonder if Ray Kelly, New York City Police Commissioner since 2002, requires the cops in Times Square to go to "hospitality class."  The cops in Times Square are of a different mind set than most police officers you meet in big cities.

In the media today, we seem to focus on the cops that do bad things, instead of the cops that do kind things, go out of their way to help a tourist and treat tourist as they are the customer of the city.

Today while I was putting together a few pictures of my trip to New York, I came across an article about a NYPD officer named Lawrence DePrimo, who was on counterterrorism duty in Times Square, saw the older homeless man without shoes sitting on 42nd Street. DePrimo, 25, left and then returned with a pair of boots he bought at a nearby store for the homeless man.

 

 

 

This wasn't an act of kindness by a police officer, it was an act of kindness by a human being who happens to be a police officer.  People often say, there are good cops and bad cops, the truth is, there are good people and bad people, some of which are in law enforcement.

 

 

I am not sure where the credit goes for the way the cops in Times Square treat the tourist, but it shows that even in a large city with millions of tourist passing through every day, these cops can do their job, keep the peace and still be respectful to their fellow man.

 

 

When I speak to large groups about Life Coaching and personal development, I remind everyone, regardless if they are in public service, working at Wal-Mart or selling cars, your actions, each and every one, even if very small, go a long way in someones life.  You may not always be recognized for your actions, but you can and will make a difference in someones life.

2012 NAB Radio Show - Dallas Texas

I just returned from the 2012 NAB Radio Show in Dallas Texas.  The event was amazing with a group of over 2,000 media professionals.   I met several new on air personalities as well as reconnected with many long time friends in the business.

BookExpo America

Last week I was in New York and attended BookExpo America. This is the largest book expo of it’s kind. Each year that I attend, it seems like more and more authors are attending these shows. When I speak to groups I am often asked about book publishing, self-publishing and e-books. I always give the same advice, every time I am asked.

Today there are more opportunities than ever to publish your own book. If you have something to say, you should write a book, it is a great learning experience and helps you clarify your ideas and thoughts, just like journaling.

Having said that, writing the book is the easy part. Once you write the book, if you think the large publishing houses will listen, give you the time or day or be interested, your dreaming, unless you are in the news, famous or a politician. If your famous, they will seek you out, otherwise you will need to sell them on the idea.

Marketing your new book, trying to get a publisher to look at your manuscript is the most difficult part. If you are determined or have a unique marketing plan, you will succeed and you will feel a special satisfaction, but it takes a lot of hard work.

Michael Harrison - Talkers Magazine

When I coach someone or teach a coaching class, I often say, “ when you are ready to learn, a teacher will appear.” Or sometimes I like to say, “ you meet people in your life who make an impact, almost as if your path crossed for a reason.”

In my life, that person is Michael Harrison, founder of Talkers and Talkers Magazine. When I first met Michael in Austin Texas many years ago at a NAB Radio show, his words resonated with me, his mannerisms touched me in a special way. Michael was an early pioneer of the concept or idea of the Media Station. While that idea seemed far off at that first introduction, today we are seeing the “media station” used in almost every market, large and small.

I owe a great deal to Michael. He has been my mentor, my inspiration and my motivation. I am looking forward to many more years of Talkers conventions with Michael.
